Ecological Product Policy

To accomplish the objectives of its environmental and economic policy, the EU puts an emphasis on the instrument of “public procurement”. Public contracting bodies need to favour environmentally friendly and innovative solutions to reshape the market - a challenging undertaking.

The thematic focus of the research unit Ecological Product Policy is ecologically and socially responsible public procurement. We analyse the status quo of public procurement , collect the factors influencing the implementation of sustainable and innovative solutions , and identify the potential environmental impact of these solutions. We are commissioned by the Austrian Ministry for Environment to run the naBe-Service point , the Austrian information centre for environmentally sound procurement.

We also work in the following areas connected to sustainable public procurement:

  • Life Cycle Assessments: Assessing the ecological impact of products, services and innovative solutions.
  • Ecodesign: What can companies do to improve the ecological footprint of their products and services?
