IFZ evaluates Smart City Graz

16. December 2025

IFZ was commissioned by the City of Graz to evaluate Smart City Graz, a sustainably planned urban district in the western part of the city.

The aim of the evaluation was to assess the project’s impacts and quality of implementation. Key areas of focus included energy and mobility infrastructure, green and open space infrastructure, and social and community infrastructure. In addition, key insights for future urban development projects in Graz were identified, along with the transferability of successful solution approaches.

The evaluation was conducted using a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative surveys targeted residents, neighbours, employees of local companies, and visitors to Smart City Graz. These were complemented by qualitative interviews with expert stakeholders involved in the planning and implementation of the district. The results were sent to the city of Graz and are not publicly available.

Through this comprehensive analysis, IFZ made an important contribution to the further development of Smart City Graz and supported the City of Graz in consistently pursuing its strategic goals towards a climate-neutral and liveable city.
